The Smartest Decision You’ll Make for Your Relationship Might Not Be Romantic

But it will save you from stress, legal bills, and emotional trauma down the road.

When you think about starting a life together, a prenup or cohabitation agreement probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But here’s what most couples don’t realize:

Without a clear agreement, your future could be decided by judges and thousands of dollars in legal fees

In Canada, nearly 2 in 5 marriages end in divorce, often resulting in contested court battles and months – sometimes years – of emotional and financial strain¹. Whether you’re moving in together, getting married, or reassessing financial terms mid-relationship, having a clear, fair legal agreement isn’t just smart. It’s essential.

Why Canadians are Choosing

jointly

Jointly is a digital platform that empowers you and your partner to create legally valid prenups, postnups, or cohabitation agreements – together. Without expensive lawyers. Without awkward in-office visits. Without the court drama down the line. Here’s why Canadians are choosing Jointly:

The Hidden Cost of Doing Nothing

Cost of a contested divorce

Cost of Jointly

Contested divorces in Canada can cost over $20,000 in legal fees alone – and that’s just the beginning.

With Jointly, you can create your own legally sound agreement for a fraction of the cost – from the comfort of your couch.

Pain Relief, not paperwork

Most people avoid prenups or postnups because they seem complicated, expensive, or uncomfortable. But instead of avoiding a prenup, what if you could avoid:

  • Thousands in legal fees later on
  • Strained family relationships and conflict
  • The emotional weight of having your breakup managed in a courtroom

Jointly was created to remove the barriers and make it easy to make an agreement. Our platform walks both partners through a step-by-step process that’s lawyer-built, secure, and designed for real-life relationships.

Jointly vs Traditional Processes

The Legal Protection You Need - Without the Cost, Conflict, or Courtroom

Most couples don’t realize that traditional legal agreements aren’t just expensive – they’re built on a system that assumes conflict.

Lawyer-led prenups and postnups often start with one partner hiring a lawyer alone, making the conversation feel adversarial from day one. The result? Delays, miscommunications, and costs that spiral fast.

Jointly flips the script. It’s collaborative by design – built for couples who want to protect their future together, not fight over it.

Jointly is not able to handle the separation of a jointly operated business. Send us a note if you have questions!

Jointly does not support planning for property on reserves. Send us a note to let us know what you'd like to see incorporated into our future plans!

At present, Jointly is not able to support committed polyamorous relationships. Send us a note to let us know what you'd like to see incorporated into our future plans!

Relationship agreements which include parenting arrangements are not enforceable unless you are already separated or thinking about separating. Because of this, Jointly does not have the option to include parenting arrangements that would apply if your relationship ends . Send us a note if you have any questions!

You should not sign a relationship agreement if someone is forcing you to do so or if there is abuse in your relationship. Please talk to a lawyer, who can help you navigate this situation.

Frequently asked questions

Prenuptial, cohabitation, and marriage agreements are three different types of agreements that couples can consider, each serving a similar purpose.  The reason you may choose one over the other depends on the status of your relationship. Check out this article for more information.

You can get started on our course with just a computer and an internet connection!  When you’re ready to start building your agreement, you’ll need a list of all of your property and debts – but we’ve built a worksheet to help take you through that.

In most provinces, you can complete the entire process online without visiting a lawyer, although having independent legal advice on your final agreement may make it stronger. Some provinces require you to have a lawyer provide you with a certificate of independent legal advice.  If that’s the case for your province, we’ll tell you that in the course.

We have built Jointly to fit as many people as possible.  If you are in a relationship with only one other person and your property consists of typical asset classes (real estate, investment accounts, a small business), Jointly is a fit for you!  Some examples of when Jointly is not a good fit include if you or your partner own property on a reserve, or you’re in a polyamorous relationship.  Check out our screening tool to find out more about whether Jointly will work for you!

Right now, Jointly is only available to Ontario residents. Legal services in Canada are provincially regulated.  We are working with legal regulators across the country to bring Jointly to as many Canadians as possible, as soon as we can!  Sign up for our waitlist to be notified when we’re available in your province, or follow us on Instagram!
