We think everyone benefits from a prenup, but they are particularly important when one partner will give up career opportunities for children, when one partner earns significantly more than the other, if either partner owns a business, and when one or both partners are coming into the relationship with pre-existing assets they want to ensure remain separate. Ideally, you should finalize your prenup a few months before getting married.
How long does it take to get a prenup In BC?

If you use a lawyer to draft your prenup, the process is likely to take several weeks or up to a couple of months. The process with a lawyer involves each person meeting with their own separate lawyer to provide information and receive advice, and then those two lawyers will negotiate the terms of the agreement.

If you don’t have a prenup in BC, there are laws in place that decide what happens to your property. These laws are designed by legislators as a one size fits all solution. The only way to make sure your property is divided in a way that fits your circumstances at the end of a relationship is to make your own prenuptial agreement.

The average cost of a prenup in BC ranges from $1,500 to $5,000. This includes legal fees, financial disclosures, and possible negotiations between both parties.
